    Translation into Afrikaans

Afrikaans is a language that emerged in the setting of a colonial clash of cultures. It was formed on the basis of Dutch, but eventually absorbed elements of Portuguese, German, Malay and the languages of the indigenous African languages. The result is a unique, simplified and practical language that is used by more than 7 million people today. Thanks to close trade and business ties with South Africa, the demand for translation from / into Afrikaans is growing rapidly.

Afrikaans translation: a unique language system

The language may seem simple, but only at first glance. To have a quality translation into Afrikaans, a number of specific factors should be taken into account, otherwise the meaning of the text may change completely. These include:

    • Lack of cases — Afrikaans has a simplified grammar: parts of speech often shift and change the meaning of the sentence
    • Lexical diversity — the language contains many borrowings that have several meanings depending on the context
    • Cultural references — many phrases and words have cultural or emotional connotations that are not obvious without a deep knowledge of the local context
    • Regional differences — even within South Africa, Afrikaans sometimes sounds different, and the meaning of individual terms varies.

Since even a very simple sentence requires careful elaboration, it is worth ordering a translation from/into Afrikaans only from experienced translators.

What are the challenges of translating Afrikaans?

All areas of translation require accuracy. If you translate from Russian to Afrikaans automatically, without considering the context, the result will be far from expected. And vice versa: experienced translators have the tools and skills to preserve:

    • stylistic fit
    • grammatical accuracy
    • correct rhythm and logic of sentence construction, and
    • culturally adapted terminology.

Even a native speaker may not cope with technical or medical translation without the appropriate background — especially when it comes to translating from Ukrainian to Afrikaans. Therefore, it is important to avoid the following mistakes:

    • Inconsistency of terminology — for example, “service provider” can be translated differently depending on the context (business, IT, medicine)
    • Violation of formal style — official texts often suffer from simplification or emotion
    • Incorrect sentence construction — in Afrikaans, the typical SVO order (subject + predicate + object) changes depending on the stress, and this requires professional adaptation.

Quality translation from Ukrainian into Afrikaans is only feasible if the content is accurately conveyed and official requirements are met, which requires a deep knowledge of the language and the specifics of the subject matter.
