If you participate in an important event in another country and you don`t know the language, then you need a simultaneous interpreter. Synchronists accompany most public figures: politicians during summits, Nobel laureates at scientific conferences and representatives of CEO corporations within business meetings. Simultaneous interpreting is even used during the Pope’s sermon in Vatican.
Simultaneous interpreting for large events by a team of professional interpreters
Therefore, the cost of a synchronist`s error is extremely high. For example, a diplomat John Coleman Holmes tells about this in his book, citing the speech of the Spanish delegate in France as an example.
His phrase “I beg your pardon, I have a cold,” the interpreter translated from French as “Sorry, I have constipation.” It caused a wave of laughter in the hall and, as a result, ruined the reputation of the politician and the interpreter.
Types of a simultaneous interpreting in Kyiv
Simultaneous interpreting is one of the most difficult types of interpretation. Only 20% of interpreters who deal with consecutive interpreting can provide high-quality simultaneous interpretion services.
There are 3 types of simultaneous interpreting:
- “By ear”, when the interpreter listens to the speaker’s speech and translates the information in blocks. This is the most complicated type.
- “From paper”, when an interpreter receives the text of the speech in the written form 15 minutes before the speech and translates it during the event, making necessary adjustments.
- “Simultaneous reading”, when the interpreter reads the prepared translation during the speech, making adjustments if the speaker moves away from the primary source.
