    Translation into Catalan

Catalan is often considered a dialect of the Castilian Spanish, however, it is not. Instead, Spanish often borrows from this language. The word ‘paella’ is associated with Spanish, while it is a Catalan word. This is just one example of the unusual nature of this language.

It is a separate language with its own history. The status of the language varies from region to region, but it is very common on the Iberian Peninsula, the Balearic Islands and even in France, and is the mother tongue of 10 million people.

Therefore, translation from/into Catalan is more than just a transformation of the text, it is also about considering the mentality and style.

Things to know about the Catalan language

Catalan has its own characteristics: a complex system of verb conjugation, specific rules of agreement, unique orthographic elements (such as -ny-, -l-l-, -ig) and a rich regional vocabulary. A Catalan translation requires:

    • Understanding the difference between the languages, such as Catalan, Spanish, Valencian and Occitan
    • Accurate stylistic rendering according to the type of text (official, marketing, technical), and
    • Knowledge of terminology in specialised areas.

There are many nuances, and each of them matters. To avoid mistakes and ambiguities, it is worth ordering a translation from/into Catalan from a translation agency with a proven track record.

Why translation from Ukrainian into Catalan is a difficult task

Translating from Ukrainian into Catalan has its challenges: the imagery, metaphors and emotionality of Ukrainian often do not have direct equivalents, so they require adaptation. To translate from Russian into Catalan, knowing the words is not enough — you need to completely rebuild the text to fit a different grammatical logic. Catalan hardly ever uses complex subordinate constructions with participial phrases, which are typical of Russian. The main difficulties in translating from Slavic languages include:

    • Lack of equivalents for fixed expressions
    • Different sentence construction and grammatical relationships, and
    • The need for cultural localization of concepts.

Therefore, for accurate and natural translation, it is important to have a deep understanding of both source and target cultures. Otherwise, the translation from Ukrainian into Catalan loses its meaning or sounds unnatural.
