    Translation into Khmer

    Cambodia is an exotic country and its language, Khmer, is also unusual. As if that weren’t enough, the Khmer alphabet is also very distinctive. Just one fact will suffice: it has more than 70 characters in three groups. There are not only vowels and consonants, but also diacritics that are unusual for Ukrainian. The language has many layers, being one of the oldest in Southeast Asia. This affects both the vocabulary and word formation of Khmer. When translating, it is important to rely on these cultural and stylistic features of the language and its speakers. There are no cases in this language. And how do you translate without cases? In spoken language, they use a very unusual phonetics, and in written language, they employ a very unusual grammar.

    Translation from / into Khmer will be relevant in all industries: Cambodia is one of the centers of tourism and business in Asia, therefore it constantly attracts new residents and business people. What is special about the Khmer language?

    Grammatical structures are modified according to the context. A sentence has a fixed word order: subject, predicate verb, and object.

    For accurate Khmer translation, you should consider:

    • distinction between formal and informal language;
    • correct translation of numbers and time;
    • cultural characteristics of terms and concepts;
    • variability of vocabulary in different regions.

    For example, the word “you” in Khmer has several forms
    : – អ្នក (neak) — neutral address
    ; – លោក (lok) — respectful address to a man
    ; – លោកស្រី (lok srei) — respectful address to a woman.
    In business translation, it is important to choose the appropriate form to avoid familiarity or impoliteness.

    Without such details, the translation will be inappropriate. Therefore, it is important to order translation from / into Khmer from specialists.

    Translating from Russian to Khmer requires restructuring the content so as to avoid a word-for-word translation. Slavic languages have cases, tenses, and verb forms that are not typical of Khmer. The sentence structure is also very different and does not correspond to our concepts. The social status of the speaker plays an important role.

    Translating from Ukrainian to Khmer is another challenge. Phrases need to be reformulated. For example, the word “experience” is more often conveyed descriptively, through actions, and the sentence structure in translation requires changes. Typical difficulties:

    • Complex grammar in source languages
    • Translation of abstract concepts
    • Cultural differences, and
    • Multiple meanings of simple words.
