    Translation into Irish

The Irish language, which belongs to the Celtic group of languages, has survived despite enormous oppression throughout the history of the Irish people. It is one of the working languages of the European Union and an official language of the Republic of Ireland.

Translation from/into Irish when entering the European market has a huge value: for the Irish, the language has become a marker of identity, a symbol of their resilience and survival. Translation is needed in all industries: from official documentation to culture. However, without deep linguistic knowledge and practical experience, such a translation won’t be handled.

    Translation into Irish: specific features

Translation into Irish means working with a language that lives by its own linguistic laws.  It has a unique grammar:

    • A complex system of alternation, where the first consonants of words change depending on the grammatical environment,
    • Three modern dialects differ significantly,
    • There are two forms of the verb ‘to be’: for a variable state (Tá sé sa bhaile — He is at home) and is for a fixed characteristic (Is múinteoir í — She is a teacher),
    • Unusual word order in a sentence — verb first, subject second, then object third, and
    • Lack of unified technical and legal terminology.

To order a translation from/into Irish, please contact our translators who have both language training and knowledge of Irish culture.

Challenges in translating from Ukrainian into Irish

To translate from Russian into Irish or to translate from Ukrainian into Irish, you will have to be very creative and convey the meaning in a non-literal way.

The logic and structure of this language may seem unusual to native Ukrainian speakers:

    • The word cabhair means ‘help’ in Ukrainian, but in a formal business context, tacaíocht is more commonly used (meaning ‘support’),
    • The sentence ‘He works as an engineer’ is translated as Is innealtóir é — the verb comes first,
    • The address ‘Dear Sir’ has the form A dhuine uasail — literally ‘highly respected person’, and
    • When translating from Ukrainian into Irish, complex sentences often need to be reworded: ‘If he comes, we’ll talk’ → Má thagann sé, labhróimid (two separate parts with a conditional construction).

Such transformations are impossible without a living language proficiency — neither artificial intelligence nor an inexperienced translator can provide them.
