Proper translation of a legal document

Each country has its unique legal system and regulations for carrying out and formalizing legal procedures. Establishing and developing business, economic, and political ties between Ukraine and other countries calls for professional support not only from lawyers but also from translators. Given Ukraine’s deeper integration into the global community, the document flow is growing: only qualified specialists can draft and translate legal documents.

Legal translation is an integral part of international relations; its purpose is to exchange legally binding information between people. This should be done by a professional who is familiar with both country’s legislation and proficient in both languages. The challenge here lies in the specifics of the documentation: templates, structure, and terminology typical of only one of the parties. The right way to translate a legal document so that it meets the requirements of both countries:

1. The content of the source text must be conveyed with high accuracy and in accordance with translation standards. Inconsistencies in terms, even if no equivalent exists, omissions of formulations that are difficult to translate, and misrepresentations of syntax and punctuation are unacceptable.
2. The translated legal document should be worded in the original style, preserving the country’s established expressions and phrases. It is allowed to use an explanation of a term if there is no exact equivalent in another language.
3. Accurate translation of abbreviations, specific symbols, and acronyms is essential.

The translated text must be faithful to the original in terms of structure, including the placement of stamps, seals, signatures, and their translations. The accuracy and adequacy of legal translation, and its compliance with the legal norms of both parties are guaranteed when specialized translators are involved.
