    Translation into Amharic

    The world is getting more and more globalized, and the demand for rare languages is growing. Among them is Amharic, the official language of Ethiopia, with more than 25 million speakers. It is used in government documents, business, diplomacy, education and international projects. For this reason, translation from / into Amharic requires filigree accuracy and deep knowledge of language structures.

    Amharic translation: a language that does not obey templates

    Amharic is based on a script, known as Fidel, where each sign is a combination of a consonant and a vowel, and its linguistic logic does not fit into  patterns of European languages. Translating into Amharic is not just about conveying words, but about recreating meanings with the cultural code in mind. The main challenges that arise during translation:

    • writing from left to right, with more than 200 characters in the script
    • Semitic roots, similar to Hebrew or Arabic, but with a unique grammar

    • content-to-context dependence, social status of the interlocutor, and
    • with literal translation, there is high risk of loss of content.
