English-Ukrainian localization of the game Hollow Home
Hollow Home is a game developed by a young Ukrainian indie game studio, Twigames, that tells us about a teen and their life during the siege of Mariupol. The developers told us that they wanted the whole world to see the stories of Ukrainian children, and the game is based on the real events from Mariupol.
How it was done
In March 2024 the international game convention Games Gathering Lviv 2024 took place. As a partner of the event, MK:translations team offered localization for the Game Star nominee. The winners happened to be Hollow Home, and that’s an amazing case of our collaboration with talented Ukrainian devs.

Our job was the English-Ukrainian localization that would also preserve the game’s vibe and emotions of the original plot.
War games localization is an extremely touchy and complicated process for Ukrainians:
- the plot can be really heartbreaking for the gamers, especially if it’s about real-life events that have had a huge impact on them;
- so the localization team has to take into account the cultural differences, local reality, even the small talks between people during those days for the players to feel seen and understood;
- the Ukrainian language has its own peculiarities, which are vital for the quality of translation, and don’t forget about different speech patterns and the local Mariupol dialect.
That’s why this project needed to be done professionally and with lots of care for the details.
